I wrote about ALS in my manga, "Space Brothers." In the manga, Serika looses her father to ALS, but is successful with repeated experiments in space that she held to save Sharon, who was diagnosed with the same diease.
However, the story written in this manga is simply a depiction of my hopes for the near future. In reality, ALS is still an unresolved illness.
The Serika Fund was designed to bring together a wider range of people and their expertise and feelings in order to find a way to make ALS a curable disease.
My wish is that we can attain the future predicted in "Space Brothers" sooner, even if by a day.

I think that "The Serika Fund" is a perfect name for this fund! In the manga, Serika worked hard and was able to develop a medicine that cured ALS. I hope that everyone can work hard just like she did, even when the going gets rough or you feel like you want to give up. We ALS patients are always willing to cooperate. We all thank you in advance for all of your kind support.

The Serika Fund hopes to give ALS patients hope for the future. Thank you very much for shining the spotlight on ALS. To everyone who has cooperated in these efforts, I would like to ask you to also reach out and interact with us, the people who have been diagnosed with ALS. Just like you, each and every one of us is a human being with feelings- joy, anger, sadness, tranquility. It would make me very happy if you could interact with us the same way you would with anyone else.

I received my diagnosis of ALS in 2008, when I was 41 years old. I was very depressed, but my wife bravely said, "Let's cure it in 10 years!" Since then, curing ALS has been our family's goal. It's been 9 years since the first onset of my illness, and things aren't looking that great for my 10 year plan. Even so, I'd like to believe that my illness will be cured someday.
That's when I first heard news about the Serika Fund. I felt very encouraged, as if someone was pushing me from behind. There are so many people who are sincerely supporting those of us who have been diagnosed with ALS. Beleiving in a cure is definitely not just a dream. If you keep believing, we can do something. That's what I've come to think.
150 years have passed since ALS was named, but up until recently, there wasn't any way to treat it. However, due to the discovery of the gene responsible for ALS, the emergence of iPS cells, and other discoveries of multiple treatment options, research to find the cure has been progressing quickly. I feel that we are only a step away from making our hopes a reality. If we can shine light on the lack of funding, one of the huge obstacles that researchers face, I believe research will progress even further. My expectations continue to grow.
I often think about what I would do if I were cured of ALS. While I do feel that I'd like to do something special with my body if it were to gain its mobility, I think what I want to do the most is chat with my family and friends over a good meal, and laugh out loud. My wish is to have that sort of regular everyday life back again.
I am extremely thankful towards everyone who contributed to creating the Serika Fund, and also for your support. I hope to repay everyone's generosity by living my life while putting in my best effort and treasuring every day, until that day comes.

When the Serika Fund was created, I felt not only a strong hope for the future, but a sense of courage to stand up and fight as a patient myself.

"Let's give it a go, in your mind, it's all gone well"

This line has always given me the courage to take the first steps in challenge myself.

WITH ALS will work with the Serika Fund to continue accepting challenges in order to reach a future where ALS can be cured.Thank you very much for continuing to support the cause.

NO LIMIT, YOUR LIFE.

KEEP MOVING.
